The Story Behind the Piece
The Haitian flag's coat of arms carries a motto that has never been forgotten: L'Union Fait La Force — "Unity Makes Strength." At its center, a palm tree stands between cannons and cannonballs, flanked by the tools of both war and agriculture — a reminder that Haiti's people fought for freedom and then built a nation with their own hands. The flag itself was officially adopted on May 18, 1803, at the Congress of Arcahaie, where the blue and red were sewn together as a symbol of unity between all Haitians.
